This post is going to be about a pharaoh. His name was Menes. It is also going to be about what he did when he was the pharaoh of Ancient Egypt.

Menes was the first pharaoh of the 1st Dynasty in Egypt. He ruled some time between 3100-2850 B.C during the Protodynastic era of Egypt’s history. Menes also established the famous capital of Memphis.

He also unified Upper and Lower Egypt. That is called unification. When he unified Upper and Lower Egypt his army overthrew Lower Egypt. One group lived around the mouth of Nile River, near the Mediterranean Sea. Their king wore a Red Crown. Their land was called Lower Egypt. The other group lived near the mountains to the South. Their king wore a White Crown. Their land was called Upper Egypt. These two groups continued to fight. King Menes created the Double Crown, a mix of white and red..

Menes was also known as Hor-Aha meaning “Horus of the Reeds” the Hawk King. The names of his father and mother are unknown but his ancestors are believed to be the “Horus-people” or the “Hawk-people” of the Predynastic Period. His chief wife and consort was Princess Neihotpe.
